Much like the season itself, for spring makeup, think bright pops of colour, a fresh brightness and a simple, DIY aesthetic to your overall look. Five hot trends soon to bloom:
Oceans Away
Emerald green and bright blues are the colours of the season. Colour shy? “One of the best ways to ease into wearing coloured eye makeup is to apply a soft, shimmery shade across the lids,” says Toronto-based makeup artist Diana Carreiro. If you’re up for going a bit bolder, line eyes with a bright green liner.
Lip service
With Baz Luhrman’s movie The Great Gatsby slated for release in May, expect to see 1920s glamour to stir beauty cravings for a classic red lip. Also big for spring? Hot pink. Carreiro loves this trend for the sweetness of it. “There’s a bit of innocence to it,” she says. For cool skin tones, she recommends looking for a lipstick with a blue undertone, whereas warmer skin tones can rock a more orange- or red-based shade.
Liner notes
On the 3.1 Phillip Lim and Lanvin runways, eyeliner was sexy and smudged, almost grungey. To get the look, simply smudge a soft black kohl liner with a blender brush for halo effect, says Carreiro. Keep it looking classy and from traveling too far by setting it with a black or dark brown shadow and smudging again.
Matte skills
Matte lipstick can be unforgiving. “Make sure lips are exfoliated and well moisturized before applying a matte lipstick,” says Carreiro. Start by lining and filling in lips with a neutral pencil, and then brush on matte colour. To prevent thin lips from disappearing with a matte finish lipstick, she suggests opting for a trompe l’oeil effect. “Use two slightly different shades of the same colour, with the lighter one to the centre of the lips, blending well,” says Carreiro.
Everything is illuminated
“This season there’s luminosity all over the face — not just the high planes — creating more curves to the makeup,” says MAC senior artist Melissa Gibson. So rather than highlighting just the cheekbones, tip of the nose and cupid’s bow, the brows, collarbone and even ears are glowing.
